I'm coming back to the game after a month and a half break and I was wondering, am I able to add any mods without messing up my game?

The "messing up my game" part is extremelly subjective.

It depends on:

1. The mod
2. Mod requirements
3. If you met the requirements
4. Other mods
5. Other requirements
6. The region
7. If you added/installed it properly
8. Reasons that have nothing to do with the mod

So, just read the mod instructions and follow them, and it should be fine.
Unless you use 32bits, then good luck...
